A mouth full of a title to make the statement that the time is ripe for the Historical Formula One Championship to bring in the 90s cars. Ten years or even longer ago there were already the beast of the 80s on the historical grids. Growling their atmospheric engines before the Turbo’s kicked in. Also the Turbo’s appeared on the grid since. Why don’t we see a 90s revival during the historical weekends. Dedicated to the last real experiment in the Formula One that appeared on the grid? Indeed let’s pled for a 90s Revival and bring the early 1990s back alive like the Life F190 did!
I might be obsessed with the Life L190, even more then with the Lola Mastercard T97/30. There is a reason for it. The Life L190 is in my opinion the last experiment that appeared on the grid in the sport we love. It was the early 90s, a time teams like Life Racing Engines couldn’t even exist anymore. Yet there they were. Reviving the failed First 189 as the Life L190 with their own monstrous W12 engine. Only to be replaced by a more reliable standard Judd engine. I even dare to say that Ernesto Vita is on the same level as the pope.
Therefore we should consider, well the FIA should, to add a new series to the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship. Dedicated to the early days of the 1990s. Sure I’m aware that the cars in the 90s were more advanced than their brutal ancestors from the 80s. Still, a lot of the cars appear even during those historic races (or the Boss GP) on the track to give demo’s and what not. I’m aware as well that the FMHFOC is based on several era’s in the Formula One. Though, why not a special class for the 90s. Like there are several championships for Historic Formula 2, Formula 3, Formula Vee and so on.
There wouldn’t be even a need for the FIA to organise this championship there could a be arranged a new series dedicated to this interesting era. My plan would be to stretch the years even and start from 1988 onwards until 1994. At that time you only had Pacific (and later Forti) left who were more or less ancient. A field stuffed with Dallara’s, EuroBrun’s, Coloni’s, Osella’s, Zakspeeds, Minardi’s, Jordans, Larrousses, Marches, Leyton Houses, Life’s and so on. How amazing would that be! Indeed the focus in my idea is mostly on the smaller teams from those days. I probably would ask Andrea Sassetti if he is willing to fulfil a role in the management of the series.
I know, it is a dream, a dream that in some sort of form will be realised sooner or later. The amount of fans that adore that era is immense and with a dead sport in 2024 why not return to the simplicity of difficulty of the 1990s?
