While March (nee Leyton House) was in 1990 positively about their future in the Formule One, this would change only a season later. When in September 1991 Akira Akagi was implicated in a financial scandal involving the Fuji Bank and his Marusho Kosan Company. Therefore, Akagi was arrested and Leyton House moved rapidly into bankruptcy. With two races left in the 1991 season Ken Marrable took over the team though with no money left. At that time Leyton House was working on their car for 1992. It seems that this was the S921. However, for 1992, now as March F1, the team developed the CG911 into the CG911B. For 1993 while the team barely survived the winter they appeared with the CG911C in Kyalami. However, it seems that for 1993 a new design was in the planning the March M93. Time to dive into all those unraced March cars.
1992 Leyton House / March 921
In January 1992 it was still unsure if Leyton House would appear in the grid that season. Ken Marrable stated in Autosport 30-01-1992 that he was working day and night to gain the money. The team was already preparing their cars at Bicester. The first three races of the season the team would use the CG911 car for the first three races of the season. There was a brand new design for 1992 from Chris Murphy ready to be build. Due to the aftermath with Leyton House the team was delayed with the new design. According to Marchives.com this would have been the March 921. Ilmor would power the team in 1992 as well.
However, after a few races into the season the team was struggling, like Brabham, terribly to keep afloat. The money was gone, and talks were held with four potential sponsors. Therefore, the team kept racing with the CG911B. Chris Murphy already left the team in late 1991. Perhaps the team used parts of the designs on their 1992 cars. Eventually the March 921 would become mostly the Lotus 107. Therefore, the March 921 is unraced.
1993 March CG911C
March was struggling badly in the winter of 1992/1993 it is a wonder that the team even managed to fly with two cars to Kyalami. Kyalami would be the last time the team would go to a Grand Prix weekend. In Kyalami the team was unable to appear on the grid due to the lack of engine and tyres.
Surviving the winter int meant that the team would use the two year old cars again for the start of the season. The March CG911C was slightly updated and would like the previous seasons been powered by the Ilmor V10 engines. Both Lammers and Gounon were the drivers for the team in 1993.
The CG911C never appeared on the grid in Kyalami. The cars were stuck at the customs in Johannesburg airport. Therefore, there seems to be no photographic evidence of the March CG911C in existing. Interstingly, there were rumours about a brand-new design for the team in 1993!
1993 March M93
While March F1 was near the point to close it’s factory in Bicester permanently, there were talks about a brand-new design for the March F1 Team. It is the March M93. The first time it was Autosport that mentioned the new design. While the team was finalising their drivers line up for 1993 there was also new of the new car. The M93 seemed to have been designed by Gustav Brunner and Sergio Rinland. The team would appear during the first few races with the modified March CG911C. During the Spanish Grand Prix in May 1993 the team was to debut the March M93. The cars would have different livery from previous seasons. The cars were a mix of Turquoise, Purple and Green.
However, when in contacted Sergio Rinland about the March M93 he was as surprised as I am about this car and the fact he was mentioned. Sergio told me that he never worked on a March Project for 1993. In April that year he was approached at Donnington by BMS Scuderia Italia to start working for them on their still-born 1994 design. There is sadly only little info known about the M93.
