The 2020 season started badly with the Covid-19 epidemic raging on the world. However, 2020 seems to become the most interesting season since years! With the Grand Prix of San Marino as the cherry on the cake. Named as Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix it will re-appear in the Formula 1.
Yes, we are back on our beloved circuit!
For the young once who the San Marino Grand Prix was a fascinating race, which has been missed since the last race in 2006. In the 1950s the circuit was created and materialised by four local motor racing enthusiasts. Why did they do it? Easily, to boost the local economical situation after World War 2.
The first Grand Prix on Imola was in 1981. The circuit appeared on the list of circuits until the 2006 season. That season was the last season we would race on it. Many great races were shown, and many still have good memories. Sadly, we lost as well both Ronald Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna during the horrible Grand Prix weekend of 1994.
In 2006 the last Grand Prix was held, it was an interesting Grand Prix as I remember it. Michael Schumacher who already announced his retirement of Formula 1 racing won the race. While Christijan Albers will remember the race as well, only in a negative way. During the start of the race, Super Aguri driver Yuji Ide hits Albers his Midland. Not soon after he was launched in the air and made a couple of rolls before the car came to a hold. It was the end of Yuji Ide’s Formula 1 career.
I can’t believe it myself it has been 14 years ago the last race was held at San Marino. What makes the return of the Grand Prix, officially Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, special is the fact that Kimi is still on the grid. At that time, Kimi drove for the McLaren – Mercedes team. He finished the race as fifth, good for 4 points. Yes if Alonso would return two drivers would appear on the grid.
Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix is named after the north-Italian region in the province of Bologna. The race will be held on the weekend of 31th of October. The Formula One will try an experiment with skipping the Friday practice. In simple terms it means that the team have only a Free Practice on the Saturday, which will take 1,5 hour. I’m not really a fan of the idea to be honest. Though the best news is, is that we are back! Hopefully, even if the chance is small, we will return in 2021!
